About Colin Pape
I have followed a varied career as an Army officer, Chief Instructor of an Outward Bound School, a qualified Mountaineering Instructor (MIC), with experience in teaching climbing all over the UK and in leading alpine expeditions to the Western Alps, and latterly as a fly-fishing instructor and guide on Devon’s rivers and stillwaters. I settled back into my native Devon in the late 1980s since when I have had considerable experience of fishing Devon’s rivers and stillwaters for brown trout, rainbow trout, sea trout and salmon. I love the enormous variety of the Devon rivers. I fish over 8 miles of the River Teign (Upper Teign Fishing Association waters), between Steps Bridge, near Dunsford, to Chagford, a beautiful Dartmoor spate river known for its hard fighting wild brown trout and sea trout; the River Exe for salmon near Bampton, the East and West Dart rivers on Dartmoor for their lightning fast wild brownies, the Rivers Yeo and Creedy near Crediton and the Culm near Willand, excellent early season rivers and well known for their Mayfly hatch from late May to July and occasionally various stretches of the Torridge on Angling 2000 water - see Gallery. Devon is also blessed with some beautifully situated stillwaters which I use both for my own pleasure and for my clients. The South West Lakes Trust reservoirs at Kennick, Roadford and Fernworthy occupy stunning positions - see Rivers and Stillwaters. I am a keen naturalist and ornithologist and believe in pragmatic and unsentimental conservation and management of all wildlife and love nothing more than a good debate about the difficult issues facing the countryside today. I have been an Orvis Endorsed Fly Fishing Guide for four seasons now and contribute to the Orvis website. I have endorsed their excellent fly fishing equipment and use their TLS Power Matrix, Frequent Flyer, Clearwater, Shooting Star and their new superb Helios rods, and their high quality Large Arbor, Mid Arbor and BBS Battenkill reels, both for my own fishing and for my clients. I strongly recommend you visit the Orvis website, where you will see one of my articles on fishing the West Country rivers, and that you obtain an Orvis fishing catalogue. I have taken their Frequent Flyer rods on my fishing trips to New Zealand and cannot recommend them highly enough!
